What is A Ribbon Run Thru It?
I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome you to A Ribbon Run Thru It. I'm so glad you're here. To explain how the name A Ribbon Run Thru It (ARRTI) came about is a journey going back several years. ARRTI is more about telling a story than a name. I have always been a little crafty, learning to crochet and sew with my mom and my grandmother. I've always been intrigued with making things and find no greater pleasure than making something with someone special in mind. For years, I bounced from one crafty medium to another. I've done crochet, embroidery, used a Cricut to design vinyl decals and paper crafts, even dabbled in sublimation to design shirts, you name it....I've tried it.
A few years ago, I got a wild hair and decided to make a baby quilt for a friend.....having never quilted before. I mean, how hard can it be? You just take fabric, cut it into pieces and sew it all back together.....right? It was so much harder than I thought and I quickly realized that I had no idea what I was doing. I didn't know the first thing about seam-allowance or what it meant to press the seams. I would have told you that 'nesting' the seams had more to do with birds than quilting, never mind that I didn't have a clue how to actually quilt and bind the whole thing. I didn't even own a rotary cutter. I didn't have a clue but, somehow, I managed to put together the quilt, with the help of YouTube, and it didn't look half bad.....just don't look too close.
I was hooked! I was desperately aware that I had so much to learn and I couldn't wait to dig into learn all things quilt. I made a couple lap quilts, a few baby quilts, and a table runner or two. And, like all my previous crafting adventures, I loved having a special someone in mind when making these projects. I loved each step, from picking out the pattern and the perfect fabric to attaching the binding at the end. The common thread....or RIBBON, if you will, in each project was the very personal and intimate story or special occasion behind them. And just like that, A Ribbon Run Thru It was born.
Each quilt has is carefully assembled with a specific person or occasion in mind, the common RIBBON that holds the whole thing together. Without the story, there would be no quilt. Quilts, like many other craft disciplines, are a labor of love, they tell a story, bring special occasions to memory and can be passed down from generation to generation helping to keep that story alive. Maybe I over romanticize the power of a quilt and it might sound a bit silly but quilting is very personal to both the quilter and the recipient.
I want to share my love of quilting with you. In this blog, we'll explore different projects. I'll share some of my favorite quilting stories, challenges and tricks. Quilting is not so much a destination but a journey and I hope that you'll join me in it. I also hope that when you finish your quilt top and you are looking for someone to help you put the final touches on it with the quilting and binding you'll think of A Ribbon Run Thru It and know that I will take the up-most care for your quilt as if it were my own.
Happy Quilting!
