Thursday Quick Tip: Machine Binding Your Quilt

Binding is one of my favorite parts of making a quilt. It's the final step that frames all of your hard work and transforms a quilt top into a finished quilt.
If you've been hesitant to try machine binding, here are a few things that have helped me.
Start with a Double-Fold Binding
I normally start with a 2½-inch strip of fabric. I join the strips, fold the binding in half lengthwise, and give it a good press before attaching it to the quilt.
Attach the Binding to the Back First
I stitch the binding to the back of the quilt using a ¼-inch seam allowance. This gives me just the right amount of fabric to wrap around to the front for a clean finish.

Press Before You Finish
Here's a step I don't skip—I press the binding flat after it's attached to the back of the quilt.
That quick press makes it much easier to wrap the binding smoothly to the front and helps create a crisp, polished edge.
Slow and Steady Wins
When it's time to sew the binding down on the front, don't rush.
Slow and steady is the name of the game.
One trick I've learned is to listen to your sewing machine. When the needle is tracking right where you want it, your machine develops a rhythm and a familiar sound. If you drift off your stitching line, you'll often hear the change before you even notice it.
Learning to recognize that subtle difference makes it much easier to make small adjustments before they become noticeable.

Remember...
Don't worry if your first machine-bound quilt isn't perfect. Every quilt teaches you something new, and every binding gets a little better than the last.
The goal isn't perfection—it's creating a quilt that will be used, loved, and enjoyed for years to come.
Join me next Thursday for another Quick Tip! I'll show you an easy way to join the ends of your binding for a smooth, professional-looking finish. It's a small detail that gives your quilt that polished, finished look.
Happy Quilting,
Terri
